Top 3 Tips for Parents in the NICU

Do you ever feel like everyone has a role in the NICU to care for your baby but you? Often we feel like we don’t really have a specific role in caring for our own baby with so many staff members watching their every move. But guess what? NICU mamas have the most important role of all: the parent is the most important caregiver of all! These are my top 3 helpful insights for when you are stuck in the NICU. They may seem obvious but sometimes in times of stress we all need a gentle reminder.

1. Be there

It’s time for baby to get to know you outside the womb.  Give a loving touch and get that skin-to-skin time in however you can.  Skin-to-Skin contact is proven to decrease length of hospital stay and stabilize heart rate and respiratory rate quicker.

2. Trust your maternal instincts

Trust your gut and be honest about your feelings.  Your mama bear instincts are kicking in, use them to your advantage.  While in the NICU, learn as much as you can.  Show a presence to the NICU staff so they are aware that you want to learn as much as you possibly can while you are there.

3. Communicate with your partner

Your family and partner are going through similar emotions to you.  Communicate your feelings with your partner or loved ones and accept a little extra help.  This is a difficult time, but you’ll get through it, mama!  Even if you have to spend a little extra time in the NICU, your little one is perfect.

Good luck, mama- you’re doing great.  If you need a little extra support or encouragement, call Momseze.  Available 24/7/365
